What you can check safely: with the damper closed, shine a flashlight up the flue from the firebox. If daylight shows around the plate edges, the seal is gone. Where DIY goes wrong: the throat frame on a Gelco 100 series is mortared into the lintel and weighs 15-20 pounds. Extracting it without dropping masonry into the firebox or cracking the surrounding brick takes a specific sequence. The 200 series cable routes through the flue wall; improper routing can obstruct the flue or leave the cap misaligned, which creates a carbon monoxide path back into the house.
