There’s a safe middle ground and a hard stop. You can check your Famco cap from the ground with binoculars: look for visible cracks in the crown surface, gaps between crown and flue tile, or rust bleeding from under the cap skirt. You can also check your attic for water staining on the chimney chase during daylight - a flashlight beam catches wet sheathing even before it stains drywall.

But crown work is roof work, and roof work on a chimney stack is height work with a fall risk. More than that, a bad seal traps water inside instead of keeping it out, accelerating the damage you’re trying to stop.
